Artist’s Statement

My artwork takes two forms: fact and fiction. As an avid sketcher, much of my work comes from direct observation. Like a documentary, my sketches are immediate and factual as I go out into the world and record my surroundings, friends, dinner, travel, etc.

I also make oil paintings on canvas and on paper. Though my paintings tell stories about memory and relationships by focusing on people and places, they are removed enough from fact for me to call them fiction. The images are filtered through memory and time, through telling the stories of the memories, and through others' stories. The results are a reflection on memory and relationships, and the connections between people, places and moments.

Each form can’t exist without the other: I need fact to make fiction, and I need fiction to make sense of fact. I make sketches and I make paintings to tell the story of the people and places that help shape us.
